Touch and Go
Things had been quiet. We had been training off and on for days in the field. It seemed like their yelling at us had been hot and cold. Everything seemed to be touch and go between us all. We were getting antsy. It was nearing the end of our initial training periods.
We had spent all day training and running an obstacle course. It was a bayonet course. We had to run, jump over walls, attack dummies, and such. It was actually fun, but donât let the drill sergeants know that. They would take the fun out of it. I understand that training in important and it is, but sometimes we needed to just let go. This course was a way we could do that.
I didnât realize that it was nearing the end of actual basic training. We had been out in the woods camping or doing our FTX (field training exercise). We had been running lanes on the bayonet course and other movement courses. We had been training from sun up to sun down. We were all tired and hungry. But, there was something different in the air tonight. We could feel it even if we didnât understand it.
It was early Fall in the Ozarks. It was nice out and we didnât need much to keep warm. I was a little stiff from sleeping on the ground. We had been in âpupâ tents. I was sharing it with my bunk buddy, not my battle buddy. My battle buddy was sharing her tent with my bunk buddyâs battle buddy. That is a completely different story.
We were all beat and it was nearing dinner time. I started looking around, counting the drill sergeants and the one admin sergeant, and counting the trucks. Everything was accounted for. I was a little confused. I looked at my watch. It was almost 1800.
The next thing I hear is âGAS!!! GASâ!! GAS!!!â
I scrambled to get my mask on and tightened it down. I was working on getting my hood over my head, when my bunk buddy, Olsen grabbed me and handed me my M16. We ran to our foxholes on the edge of the camp and prepared to be attacked. It was part of the training exercise and we knew it. On the way, I grabbed my LBE that had my chem suit gear attached, my flak vest and my field jacket.
We settled in, realizing that it was going to be a long evening. The drill sergeants came by and smacked us on the Kevlars to count us. If the count was off, we would have to say our names. Count wasnât off. Then the resounded boom of Senior Drillâs voice echoed through the camp.
âALL CLEAR!!!â
We could take our masks off. We leaned back in the fox hole and look off our Kevlars and masks one at a time. Olsen went first while I provided cover. Then, I did mine. We took the time to pack them back up correctly, because we knew that
